10 Things i Love about Living in a Yurt

Many believe that living in a yurt is like camping in a tent, that it's cold (especially in Canada), dark & dismal.  Not so, it's warm, homely & special!  i'd like to share what i love about Yurt Life...

1. Falling asleep watching the stars pass overhead.

2. It's oh so quiet, i spend most of the day listening to the birds.  You hear the world surrounding the yurt very clearly: almost like in a tent.

3. Living so close to nature - right next to all the birds, squirrels, ants, spiders & chipmunks.  (And when you have to go outside to pee & empty the sink, you're more likely to stay out & spend time outside!)

4. We have (almost) every modern convenience - wi-fi, electricity (enabling lights, a heater, kettle, fridge, toaster oven, awesome speakers, even a bread-machine), gas cooker.

{insert stars}
5. The energy naturally flows & circulates.  There is no place for energy to collect & stagnate, which happens in rooms with corners.  Making the yurt a wonderful space for meditation circles, all kinds of energy work & artistic projects.

6. The space is very adaptable;  watching a movie, a brainstorming session for a video project, jewelry making, chilling reading, entertaining friends, skyping family, studying french, movie projections, cooking a feast etc etc. There's no fixed space - no 'my space' & 'your space'.

7. Living in an integrated space.  Whatever you're doing, be it cooking, meditating, working, you are connected to whoever else is in the yurt (no walls separate you).

8. The shape of the yurt feels like a circus tent during the day & like sleeping in a UFO at night!  Yurts certainly have a magic vibe.

9. There's so much natural daylight from one window, the door & a skylight.  If you're building/buying a yurt, be sure to add lots of glass windows.

10.  Yurts are delightfully cozy & romantic in the winter, at least with a wood-burning stove!

i truly recommend the experience of living (& vacationing) in a yurt.

  1. The word yurt makes me think of two things:
    yoghurt. yurt but with more OGH!
    The song Yakety Yak by The Coasters. It featured in the film The Great Outdoors which seems relevant but is not why I think of the song- that's more because I think I'm lyrically dyslexic and think the song is Yurtety Yurt.

    Your 10 reasons for enjoying life in a yurt do not coincide with my thoughts. Perhaps you can think of reasons more along with my train of thought?
